Who am I?

My name is Joe Adcock. I am a front end website developer, living in London. I'm not one for shouting out about what I have done, but as a website developer there are three things that you should know about me:

  1. I created the world's first fully-responsive CSS church.*
  2. I evolved 'the Movember concept' to new levels, over 3 successive years, raising a total of £2506.99 for the Movember Foundation.**
  3. I was front end website developer on a project that received 3 Webby awards, as well as a BAFTA.***

I have over 10 years experience of creating for the web, working across a range of sectors, including retail, hospitality, travel, finance, fashion, entertainment, education, as well as with charities. Since moving to London in 2013 I have been setting myself independent projects, most notable of which being my Movember campaigns. These have allowed me to enhance my understanding of each aspect of the project, from UX and design, through to social strategy, as well as honing my full-stack development skills.

I am an avid book collector - in particular Penguin and Pelican books (anything between the 1930s and the 1970s will get my attention). I am a member of the Penguin Collectors Society (PCS) - an educational charity whose aim is to promote the study of Penguin books, and to conserve historical material for researchers. The current website is in need of some front end attention, and I am awaiting authorisation from the Trustees to begin looking at how we can improve this.

Here are three things that you may also want to know about me:

  1. I try to devote my evenings (light permitting) and weekends to my allotment
  2. I am first aid trained
  3. I once acted as foreman of the jury for an eight-week long case at the Old Bailey

Employment

Senior Front End Developer, DAM Digital. damdigital.com

April 2022 - present

As senior developer, I was brought in to raise the quality of the agency's output. I came to DAM for a fresh challenge, for the first time working in a .NET-based infrastructure, and gained exposure to a lot of new technology. I joined a growing team and was key in establishing best practices.

  • Played a key role in the front end development of the new booking portal for SHY Aviation, with an emphasis on page and component creation in react. (shyaviation.com)
  • Was instrumental in the refactoring and development of a react native codebase to be deployed in a web environment, for the McArthurGlen Club app. (mcarthurglen.com/App)
  • Oversaw the front end development of the first "digital" Annual Report for Crisis, with particular focus on creation of new components and integration of feature branches created by other developers. .crisis.org.uk/about-us/annual-report-202122
  • Creation of documentation covering the array of Webpack tasks required for development of the front end of the McArthurGlen website, as a resource for new and less experienced developers. (mcarthurglen.com)
  • Worked closely with the design team to improve the design/development process and introduce best practices where required.

Lead Front End Developer, D3R. d3r.com

April 2017 - April 2022

Leading the front end output of the agency, I was brought in to improve the existing relationship between design and development. I introduced the BEM approach to the workflow, and have been responsible for mentoring junior members of the dev team in front end best practice.

  • Led the front end development on the first accessibility-focused ecommerce projects to be undertaken by the company, both for the Soho House group. (cowshed.com and sohohome.com)
  • Prototyped and built the OpsysConfigurator –a tool, built in react, to allow prospective customers to customise and purchase their PC build. (opsys.co.uk/configurator/tool)
  • Prototyped and built the Astro Track Configurator, a tool to allow lighting designers and customers to plan their dream lighting setup, before they purchase it. (astrolighting.com/track-configurator/tool)
  • Built and maintained front end code for a number of medium to large ecommerce websites, covering all aspects of the user journey from registration to product listings and detail pages, all the way through to the basket and the checkout.
  • Responsible for planning and delivery of tech talks and workshops for the development team, covering topics such as Invision tips and tricks, how to use BEM, working with npm and gulp.
  • Created packages and reusable plugins for use on the front end of all client websites, ranging from basic tools for progressive enhancement of form inputs, to accordions and navigation layouts.
  • Experience of mentoring less experienced developers across the front end landscape.
  • Liaised closely with the design team to introduce InVision as a key part of the development process, working with an atomic design approach to reduce repetition, and to encourage the use of reusable components.
  • Pivotal in the transformation of D3R's legacy websites into fully responsive websitess, most recently being the transformationof the Aspinal website from a mobile and desktop templated approach to a fully responsive approach. (aspinaloflondon.com)
  • Developed the existing email boilerplate template into a robust, responsive, and modular template, using Twig, which has been used by clients in Campaign Monitor and MailChimp including Dualit, Monica Vinader, Loaf, and Fever Tree.

Creative Technologist, Digit / Brand Union.

May 2013 - April 2017

Solely responsible for front end development of client and internal websites, liaising with designers and back-end developers to build fully-responsive websites.

  • Implementation of modular front end framework for the new brandunion.com, built using a headless Wordpress CMS.
  • Front end development of HSBC equity tool (research.hsbc.com/Radar/index) - creating a brand-new, responsive, and fully interactive digital experience from what was previously a paper-based dataset.
  • Front end development of D-Day : As it happens - an innovative real-time recollection of the D-Day landings, to accompany the Channel 4 television broadcasts. Winner of 3 Webby awards and a Bafta. (vimeo.com/74469395)
